Wasn't really happy with the progress of the Balloon piece so I have switched gears. I still like the feel of the Balloon piece, but making it totally believable might be more of a challenge than I thought.

So, in efforts to keep to true photorealistic matte painting I have entered this project instead. This actually was my first concept for this competition.

The only 3d in the piece is a watch tower. Since it was going to be hazed back so far all I rendered was the diffuse pass of it.

It looks like photobucket compressed my image beyond the resolution requirements. So for a full size version of this image please visit this url: http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com ... IdQo6cQ%3D

The image should be 1500x700.

Ahhh.....apologies...just realized the last link I posted for the full resolution image actually was NOT full resolution. What a pain.

I ended up using Imageshack. Here is the REAL full res image (1555x700) http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/19 ... opost.jpg/

Hi Andrew--

I wanted to give all of the entries in the digital matte painting challenge a quick critique while I judge the winners. You piece has the most depth to it, and if that were the only rational, you would be the winner. However, I think your final product looks a bit cartoony, like a background for "Kung Fu Panda". That is not a bad thing, but I generally think of matte painting as being more realistic. Your color scheme is particular is taking it out of the realm of realism.

Having said that, it is still a wonderful piece, and, by the way, I loved "Kung Fu Panda!" The shapes are elegant, and beautifully painted, and the composition is also one of the best in the competition.
