Great Depth with Layers of Haze - Andrew Manzella

Here is my concept piece for the contest. The idea is a steampunk world with hot air balloons over large sharp mountains rising from the ocean. The hot air balloon has wings and under the wings there are propellers as well as a rutter on the back to help steer. The engine (burner) for the balloon itself above the bucket has an exhaust system (emitting steam of course!). All of the land masses are populated with steam/steel factories and connected by an elaborate bridge system. I may also add in a little ht air balloon port.

Question though.....are we allowed to use foreground elements like smoke and clouds even though this is a still? For example, I plan on painting separate layers of clouds and smoke from smoke stacks that would later be animated by say a compositor. Do we need to show a version with such elements and one without?

Hi Andrew,

Interesting concept! Will be eagerly waiting for your WIP images!

The contest will be judged on a single still image submission; so, no moving elements are allowed!

Thanks,
Kaustav

Thanks! I've had fun with it so far. This sounds like a fun challenge and I can't wait to see all of the results and hear what the judges have to say about all the pieces.

Here are some updates on the balloons.

This is the rough unpainted over balloon multi-passed.
And here is the Ambient Occlusion pass by itself:

Next I'll begin working on the architecture.

Some updates:

Grey models:

A current WIP. I plan on really painting up the models to break the geometry and still need to add reflections and whatnot. I was playing with the amount of diffusion and will probably knock it back a bit and re-color correct the whole thing globally in the end since I'm in a strange color space.

Is it just me, or do other people hit a slump about halfway through a project like this? Any ideas on how to keep momentum flowing?

Personally, I drink Cokes, they have caffeine. I also use chocolate. Both keep my energy up. Finally, the faster I work, the lower the chances of the project dragging on to the point where I run out of gas. Encouragement from folks viewing the work, peers, etc., is also inspiring.
